Penelope Two–Five – ‘Lost Tapes for Calvin’ EP
Born in the basement of an inner city Brisbane warehouse, Penelope Two–Five present their debut EP, Lost Tapes for Calvin. Part heartfelt lyricists, part percussion partisans, Cam Lee (vocals) and Shannon Mavrik (production) bring about 24-carat feeling for their first release, which ranges from audio for the afternoon through to made-for-the-club heaviness.
She presents a soft and melancholic opening to the EP, where Cam’s dusty vocal floats against minor keys. Eerie and otherworldly, Constant Variable is a moody and twisting acid slow-burner, while bouncy and uplifting keys drive the vintage house flavour of TVGA 9000. Snowing in Dresden strips things back a little; juxtaposing a sweet vocal with dark, twisted reverbs and minimal high hats. Spacey bleeps, breakbeat claps and a warm atmospheric breakdown characterise the dreamy Timelapse, while Ox (Interlude) is a club stomper partnered with an emotion-charged vocal from Cam. Meandering and intriguing, Celestial Pt. 2 provides a low-fi haze; a contrast to the driving, warehouse-ready techno served up in the acid-inflicted Particle, to close.
Lost Tapes for Calvin comes off the back of Penelope Two-Five’s first few live shows, including an appearance at this year’s ARCADIA festival in Goomburra Valley, Queensland.
“We were lucky enough to have only our second gig at ARCADIA which was an experience and a half – shout out to the ARCADIA team. Playing live has put more meaning behind our music and as far as the creative process goes, we’re enjoying it more than ever.” Shannon.
